Thoughts

There’s nothing worse than being at work, except for being at work with nothing to do.  I swear, I must have defeated the interwebz.  I don’t even remember the end guy being particuarly difficult.

It has just been that kind of day, where there’s no one at work and nothing to do - even when I purposely go looking for work!  I drafted one complaint today (I work for a law firm) and that was it.  Hell, I didn’t even finish the complaint, because I need feedback from a senior partner before I’m sure I’m doing it right, and he either hasn’t been around or has been busy all day.

If I have to be at work, I want to be busy at work, it makes the day go much faster, no?

So, today was supposed to be my last day at The MathWorks. It is not to be though. In what may end being a poor decision, I decided yet again to accept a job offer for a part time position during school. We’ll see how it works out… I guess I’ll continue with contract and trademark work. The MathWorks is a great company (the company that makes MATLAB and Simulink), I just hope I have enough time for the position to be worthwhile, without sacrificing too much from school.

In other work related news, after 7 years, 9 months, I was laid off by IBM last week.  So ends a very large portion of my life.  That company  was very good to me, but had become stale… and everyone feared being laid off.  That was not a fun environment, towards the end.

So, I come into work this morning, and it’s curiously warm & humid in my office. Now, I work in a big office building - pretty good HVAC control. Apparently, the disclaimer on that is “HVAC may not work as expected.” Yeah, the entire cooling tower “farm” on the roof had been screwed up. It got to at least 87 degrees, plus humidity, in the office, before they finally got it running on a “temporary fix” around 12:30 PM. In the meantime, I think I downed my body weight in water. I certainly took off my dress shirt.

So also today, I get to move to a window office, in about 1.5 hours. This is a good thing, I suppose. But considering I’m leaving this job in under 3 weeks, it’s probably more of a pain than its worth. Nice view from the 3rd floor though.
