Move the Superbowl

Monday, January 28th, 2008

OK seriously, this Sunday night Superbowl stuff needs to stop.  I want to go get drunk and watch the game (esp when the Giants are in it!).  But I’m like, a working professional or something now.  I have to go to work in the morning.  Even if I can handle being drunk the night before, it means I can’t go far to watch the game (this year I’m going up to Boston… no idea how I’m going to get to work on time in the morning).

Since the NFL is obsessed with Superbowl Sunday, I propose a different solution.  Move it to Presidents Day weekend.  Sure we (as professionals) don’t generally get the day off, but a lot of people do, and we can at least plausibly take it off.  Perhaps combine this with the talk about going to an 18 game season (and eliminating pre-season) that has been going around.

How on Earth did the Giants screw that up?

They had the Patriots dead to rights… and then they blow the entire clock in the 4th.  Argh!  No more comment necessary.

Whatever crack the Yankees are smoking, I want some

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I’d like to know exactly how much crack you have to smoke, over how long a period, to trade away your only moderately decent relief pitcher. That’s exactly what the Yankees just did, for of all things, a utility infielder. A utility infielder batting .231 as of today. Obviously the Yankees don’t have enough infielders. Like I don’t know, Giambi [doing rehab starts now], Phillips [starting 1B], Cairo [utility fielder], Mienceivitcz [back at the beginning of August]. That’s not to mention the regulars like Jeter, Cano and Arod.

Now, I’m not saying Proctor was particularly great, not by any means. But it isn’t like there’s other pitchers waiting in the wings to take his spot. The Sox just signed Gagne, probably the only reliever on the market worth getting. The Yankees have some prospects in the minors, but those are mainly starters, not relievers. They could go to the bullpen, but if that was going to happen, why hasn’t it happened already, letting them see how they do, before getting rid of Proctor?

GAH.
